The University of Reading would like to congratulate our alumni that were recognised for their extraordinary achievements in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2017, announced on Friday 16 June.

• Sir Mark J Boleat (MA European Studies, 1971) - made a Knight Bachelor, for services to the financial services industry and to local government in London.

• Mrs Cheryl J Cates (BA French, 1979) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to equality and diversity.

• Miss Ruth J Sara (MSc Chemistry and Education, 1979) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to young people in the South West of England.

• Mrs Katharine M Horler (Certificate in Vocational Guidance, 1985 - Institute of Education) - made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to further education.

• Dr Pushpinder Chowdhry (MA Counselling 1994 - Institute of Education) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the Asian community in the UK.

• Dr Deborah K Goodwin (PhD Politics, 2002) - made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to Armed Forces staff education.

• Mrs Gillian C Norton (Henley MBA - whilst still Henley Management College) - made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to local government.

• Mr Thomas A Whitfield (Exec Ed Henley Management Course, 2005 - whilst still Henley Management College) - made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the NHS.

• Mr David E Curry (Henley MBA, 2003 - whilst still Henley Management College) - awarded the Queens Fire Service Medal, for distinguished service.

• Mr John B Allinson (Exec Ed Corporate Programme - whilst still Henley Management College) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the Tadworth and Walton Overseas Aid Trust.

• Mr Junier Browne (Certificate in Management, 2001 - whilst still Henley Management College) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the environment, diversity and the community in Leeds.

• Mr Duncan Tree (Exec Ed Developing Leaders, 2009 - Henley Business School) - made a Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to health and social care.

• Professor Jane Turner (Certificate in Coaching, 2005 - whilst still Henley Management College) - made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to business engagement.

• Mr Christopher S Norman (MSc Regional and Urban Planning, 1978) - awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery, for subduing an armed man.
  • Mr Norman was also awarded an Honorary Degree by the University of Reading in 2015, following his act of bravery.
