BIT President Hu Haiyan awarded honorary degree

The President of the Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Reading at a special ceremony held in China.

President Professor Hu Haiyan was presented for his honorary degree on Friday 9th September, in a special event held at the Beijing Institute of Technology during a visit by a delegation from the University of Reading. 

President Hu has been the head of BIT since 2007 and is a member of the Chinese Academy of Science. Former President of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Prof Hu has spent his career studying applied mechanics.

Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading said:

“We are delighted to be presenting President Hu with an honorary degree and inviting him to join the Reading family. Throughout President Hu’s exemplary career, he has been a leading scholar in the field of applied mechanics. His example will be an inspiration to students, staff and alumni.

“We are committed to the partnership with Beijing Institute of Technology and I am sure that it will go from strength-to-strength in the coming years.

Presenting Prof Hu for his honorary degree, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Vincenzo Raimo said:

“Professor Hu’s academic achievements alone make him a worthy recipient of an honorary degree of the University of Reading. The fact that he is a great friend of our University, helping us to grow our links and relationships in China, make this honour especially fitting.”

Over the past three decades, Prof. Hu has built a distinguished research career through his studies on the dynamics and control of mechanical systems. He has made recognized contributions to the nonlinear dynamics of vibration control systems, the dynamics and control of vibro-impacting systems, and the flutter control of aeroelastic systems. He also solved some important vibration problems in the Chinese aerospace engineering. He has authored and co-authored two monographs and over 210 journal papers, which have been cited over 4,000 times by other scientists.

Prof Hu is currently a Member of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, President of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and a valued member of a number of other boards and committees for sciences in China.

 

During the visit, Sir David Bell, Vice-Chancellor, also met students taking a BA Accounting (Beijing Institute of Technology) course taught and awarded by the University of Reading in conjunction with BIT. 176 students are currently enrolled on the course which is taught in English by a mixture of staff recruited by the Henley Business School and from BIT.
