University of Reading appoints contractor for library refurbishment

Release Date 10 May 2016

Library

The University of Reading has appointed ISG Fit Out Ltd. as the contractor for its £40m Library refurbishment.

The redevelopment will begin with early works taking place this summer and is expected to be complete in winter 2019.

The second phase of the complete modernisation and revamp of the Library will increase space for individual and group study, and will make better use of the space currently available on the ground and first floors.

The redevelopment will provide better access and security across the building as well as improving its energy efficiency, as a result of improved insulation and ventilation. New lifts will be installed, and an improved service for borrowing and returning books will be put into place.

The exterior of the building will be totally re-clad and will have replacement windows fitted throughout, providing a striking focal point at the heart of the Whiteknights campus.

The Library will remain fully operational to students across the entirety of the redevelopment and no building work will take place during student exam periods.

Colin Robbins, Director of Estates & Facilities, University of Reading, said: "We're delighted that ISG Fit Out Ltd will help deliver the redevelopment of our library. The refurbishment of the Library is the first of a number of major capital projects in an ambitious programme of continuous improvement across our campus, focused on enhancing the learning experience of our students."

Julia Munro, Head of University Library & Collections Services, said: "Students need top class, modern facilities and the Library refurbishment will ensure we can to continue to offer these into the future. The renovation will increase our capacity to accommodate students who want to work individually or in groups, update IT spaces, and improve accessibility."

Further details of the redevelopment including a timeline of the works can be found at www.reading.ac.uk/library/refurb.
