A Taste of Teaching : free course – University of Reading

The University's Institute of Education is to hold an interesting and informative two-and-a-half day course to give a "Taste of Teaching". Held over 3 days, these free sessions aim to provide a valuable insight into the teaching world, focusing on all important aspects of entering the profession. Session 1 takes place on Friday 22nd October from 9.30am till 3.30pm. This will consider the role of the teacher, give an introduction to teaching & learning, describe the curriculum and explain the structures of secondary schools. During the week beginning 1st November the Institute is arranging for all applicants to visit a secondary school. Here they can experience the feel of a classroom from a teacher's perspective and talk to staff about a possible educational career. The final session of the course, on Wednesday 10 November from 9.30am till 1.00pm, will reflect on the school visits, consider specific subject areas and provide information about the different routes into teaching. Prue Goodwin, from the Institute of Education, says applicants will benefit hugely from the course. "These sessions are a perfect starting point for anyone considering this career path. All the different routes into teaching in the secondary sector will be covered, so course members end up having knowledge of all opportunities available to them."
