Summer music concert at the University of Reading – University of Reading

Release Date : 04 June 2007

The University of Reading will play host to Taplow Boys' and Children's Choirs for a performance of Carmina Burana at its summer concert later this month.

The University's Chorus and Chamber Choir will sing alongside the Taplow visitors to perform the famous 24 Medieval Latin poems set to music by the German composer Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936. Also being performed will be the music of Tchaikovsky, Rossini and Gershwin

The Taplow choirs, under their conductor Philip Viveash, will perform their own programme in the first half, as will the University Chamber Choir, then both will join forces with the University Chorus after the interval for Orff's racy masterpiece.

Mr Dunlop said: "The combination of scholarly Latin and medieval high German perhaps doesn't sound promising, but the texts turn out to range from the almost comically grim to some of the most riotously bawdy ever set to music.

"The drinking songs and the hymns in praise of the uplifting effects of spring also contain moments of true tenderness, but the inexorable wheel of fate governs all."

Soloists Nicki Kennedy, Sean Clayton and Mark Evans will be joined by pianists Peter Toye and Tara Copus and a range of percussion.

The concert will take place on June 15, at 7.30pm in the Great Hall, on the University's London Road campus in Reading. Tickets are £8 or £5 for concessions and can be booked by contacting Alex Richardson on 0118 378 5256 or sending her an email.
