University opens up its car parks for NHS heroes

Release Date 25 March 2020

London Rd

Car parks at the University of Reading are now available for NHS and Royal Berkshire Hospital staff to use, with immediate effect.

Parking spaces at the University's London Road and Whiteknights campuses, which usually require a permit or pay and display ticket, will now be open for free to those working within the NHS and at the hospital during the ongoing outbreak of the coronavirus, COVID-19.

The University has provided the NHS with a permit for staff to print off and display in their vehicles.

The following car parks will be available 24 hours a day:

  • London Road: Acacia Road (accessed from Redlands Road) and Whitegates (accessed from Crown Place, off London Road)
  • Whiteknights: Car park 1A (accessed from Chancellor's Way, near the Shinfield Road entrance)

These are the closest University car parks to the hospital, providing around 450 spaces. The University will monitor demand for spaces, and open more car parks if necessary.

Lucy Virtue, Campus Services, Director, said: "As a neighbour and partner of the Royal Berkshire Hospital, we want to help in any way we can during this extremely challenging time. Making our car parks close to the hospital available to their superb staff is just one small thing we can do to help."

The University is continuing to work with the NHS and Royal Berkshire Hospital, as well as other local partners, to see how University expertise and facilities can be best used to support them and help our community during the COVID-19 outbreak.
