RUBC Women's Crew Turning The Tide
Release Date : 21 March 2007
The 2007 Women's 8 Head of the River Race proved a great success for The University of Reading Boat Club (RUBC).
Held over the famous Oxford Cambridge Boat Race course in London, but rowing the route backwards from Chiswick to Putney, 280 crews gave their all over the 4 miles and 374 yards stretch of the Thames, with RUBC finishing in a magnificent 7th place.
This result meant they improved 114 places from last year's race, a fantastic effort considering the quality of the competition which included crews from both Oxford and Cambridge.
With a start order based on the previous year's finishing positions, Reading had the disadvantage of having no clear water. This meant having to overtake other boats and taking slower lines around bends, making their achievement even more special.
"University of Reading Director of Rowing Will Rand, says the crew should feel extremely proud of their placing: "All the girls in the crew have trained really hard through the winter and deserve this amazing result.
"I am really excited at the future of women's rowing at Reading. We are lucky to have rowers of immense talent and with the recent upgrade of our women's rowing facilities, I believe that their performances will go from strength to strength. With RUBC winning the prestigious "Team of the Year" at the University's Students Union Annual Awards, this has been a great month for the club."
The Reading University crew was:
Tash Page, Anna Bebington, Lauren Fisher, Laura Hunter-Smith, Claire Abbey, Nikki Brown, Jenny Collins, Nikki Godbold & coxed by Robyn Inglis (Coached by Eira Parry).
