'Perfect Bouquet' decorated with Chelsea award

Release Date 25 May 2006

the perfect bouquet displayThe Horticultural Technology Unit (HTU) at the University of Reading has been awarded the prestigious Silver-Gilt Lindley Award at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. The Unit's display, entitled 'The Perfect Bouquet', was entered into the Lifelong Learning section of the show and aims to demonstrate the science behind the post-harvest production of cut flowers and what is involved in getting the perfect bouquet from farm to vase. The display demonstrates the reasoning behind the use of post-harvest treatments and why they are used commercially. The HTU independently assesses post-harvest treatment products for several manufacturers, UK supermarkets and supermarket suppliers. The commercial use of these products has allowed many retailers to be able to guarantee the life of their flowers. This is vital in reducing wastage caused by below-standard flowers, ensures repeat sales and minimises the number of customer complaints. This year's arrangement was co-ordinated by Sarah Swan with assistance from Trevor Pitman. The artwork was produced by students from the University's Typography department, Sarah Owen and Yaiza Felipe Hernandez, and will form part of their portfolio assignments. Sarah Swan commented, 'We are absolutely thrilled with our award. We enter a display every year and it's great to be rewarded for our hard work.'
