Sooner or later: Shifting the timing of electricity demand

When we all consume electricity at the same time, energy suppliers have to activate dirty old power plants with excessive greenhouse gas emissions and high system costs. Shifting the timing of electricity demand is critical for balancing the grid when consumption is high and when there are drops in supply from renewables. However, little is known about the extent to which pricing and new technologies will enable a higher level of demand-side flexibility. In this inaugural lecture, Jacopo Torriti presents research on the timing of electricity demand, peaks, people’s activities and demand-side flexibility. A drinks reception will follow the lecture at 18.30 in the Architecture Building foyer.

Jacopo Torriti is a Professor of Energy Economics and Policy in the School of the Built Environment, University of Reading and a Co-Director of the Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions (CREDS). Jacopo is a member of Ofgem Academic Panel and seats on Defra Economics Advisory Panel. Before joining the University of Reading, he worked at the London School of Economics, the University of Surrey and the European University Institute. He obtained a PhD from King’s College London, a Master from King’s College London and a Laurea in Economics from Università di Milano.
