Summary module description:
The development of skills in graphic communication through a self-directed project.

The module develops conceptual approaches to a range of practical typographic and communication design problems. It does this through the analysis and execution of concise design activities targeting skills that are both design specific and transferable to other problems.

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students should be able to:

• explore alternative approaches to a problem

• identify and implement the most appropriate approaches 

• plan and produce a comprehensive work record

Additional outcomes:
Students should also be able to articulate their ideas visually and explain their work..

Outline content:
Students will typically work on one or two projects which will address a range of typographic and graphic communication issues.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Projects start with group discussions to explore the nature and requirements of the brief. Students will often present and defend their approach to the brief in interim seminars held in smaller groups. Projects end with a larger group meeting to review work and to assess and evaluate the work of peers. Additional feedback and discussion occurs in individual sessions.

Other information on summative assessment:

A single practical project is submitted for summative assessment in summer term. Marking and moderating will take into account the banded percentage awarded at the formative assessment stage (see below) and any additional work the student has undertaken prior to resubmission.

Formative assessment methods:

Formative feedback is given during the project; further feedback (including 'monitoring' feedback in the form of a banded percentage) is given after initial project submission; a final opportunity for feedback is offered in summer term to students making changes before resubmission.

Penalties for late submission:

Non-standard penalties apply to the late submission of Part 3 practical work that is assessed in Summer Term. 10% of the total marks available for the work will be deducted from the final mark where work is submitted up to 24 hours late. Thereafter the mark falls to zero. Assessors may exercise discretion in the application of penalties.

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.
  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    Length of examination:

    Requirements for a pass:
    A mark of 40% overall.

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Practical work that bears a confirmed mark of less than 40 must be resubmitted by an August/September date to be notified.
