Summary module description:

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to some of the fundamental constructs in the study of neuropsychology and, in particular, how they relate to some clinical/neuropsychological disorders.


Aims:

The purpose of this module is to inform students about the current state of knowledge and debates in clinical neuropsychology. Topics covered in this module reflect the research expertise of the School in clinical neuropsychology.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, students should be able to: • Describe some key theoretical notions in clinical neuropsychology. • Be able to offer a definition of key terms or ideas in the area • Describe important perceptual/cognitive changes (and the underlying changes in the brain) in a range of disorders • Be able to describe and evaluate some recent experimental work in the field of neuropsychology. • Apply their knowledge in the evaluation of psychological research.

Additional outcomes:
It is anticipated that this module will inform much subsequent work by students on postgraduate courses in psychology.

Outline content:

Disorders of processing, in particular in memory & executive processes, in clinical populations. Examples of possible topics include: Alzheimer’ Disease; Autism Spectrum Disorders and their neurobiology; Dysxecutive disorders.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The seminars will be made up of a mixture of lectures, interactive discussions, group activities and guided reading.

Other information on summative assessment:
One two-hour examination, comprising two 1 hour ‘seen’ essay questions: answer two questions from four on the paper. Questions released two weeks in advance of the examination.

Students will be invited to give presentations and/or contribute to class discussion which will facilitate their learning.
