Aims:
This unit seeks to build confidence in the use of general mathematical tools and techniques, in preparation for later units in the Computer Science curriculum. It is directed particularly towards students whose previous contact with mathematics is limited.
Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
use basic mathematical methods in linear algebra and calculus;
carry out calculations involving complex numbers;
solve simple differential equations
Additional outcomes:
Students should appreciate how mathematics is of benefit to computer science.
Outline content:
Mathematical ideas and methods essential to computer science are introduced. The main areas covered are linear algebra (matrices), calculus (differentiation and integration) and differential equations.
Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module comprises of two lectures and one compulsory tutorial per week. In tutorials guidance and feedback is provided to help students understand the material.
