Summary module description:
This module explores the field of intellectual property law.

Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the intellectual property system, with particular emphasis on the laws of copyright, patents, passing off, trade marks and breach of confidence; to identify and explore the rationales for intellectual property protection; and to enable students to assess their practical day to day implementation. Students should gain a broader conceptualisation of the interface between legal rules and physical realities.

By the end of the module, the student should be able to:
• Identify the main rationales for intellectual property law
• Demonstrate a good grasp of the dynamics of intellectual property law
• Analyze and evaluate the law
• Critically appraise sources
• Organize the material used into coherent arguments

• Assist students in developing a deeper interest in aspects of intellectual property law
• Further development of skills in oral communication, team-work and independent learning

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Teaching in this module involves a mix of lectures and interactive workshop sessions.



Students are expected to prepare for workshops, in which there is a group discussion of assigned questions. One non-assessed assignment task will also be set.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    One three-hour examination paper. Three questions to be answered from a selection of questions.
