Summary module description:
This module offers students the opportunity to develop the sophistication of their creative practice, and their competency in theatre making. The module will focus on refining technical and design skills through research case studies and group and individual performance exercises which will be analysed and documented.

Aims:
The module aims: to develop students' theatre making competencies in theatre; to develop an understanding of the way in which creative processes relate to critical analysis; to encourage students to understand their practice in relation to theatre and performance histories; to enhance the students' professionalism and range professional skills in the fields of theatre and performance

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be expected to:
• demonstrate the critical, technical and organisational expertise required to realize fully short performances;
• demonstrate systematic and coherent decision making in the production of theatre;
• relate practical decisions to theoretical, critical and cultural ideas developed in earlier or concurrent critical modules;
• document processes of creation and production;
• evaluate and analyse the outcome of practical exercises critically.

Additional outcomes:
This module develops in students skills of leadership, particularly managerial and organisational skills. Decision-making and its consequences are central to the course. The module extends skills and competencies which are central to the degree: team work ; oral communication and group co-operation; library usage to assist in self-directed, independent work; appropriate deployment of research using printed and electronic resources: critical analysis of visual and written material and coherent argument; presentation of written work using IT. The module has a role in developing career-based learning, and will enable students to identify and present their skills through a variety of means.

Outline content:
Through workshop teaching, students will develop their understanding of the principles of theatre design and devising, including in visual and spatial composition, lighting, sound, and performance. Students will be asked to produce, individually or in groups, short pieces of theatre that address specific aspects of the devising process. Students will also deliver a presentation which will critically evaluate the outcomes of their practical work.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    A theatre trip or a trip to the archives may be part of the module. Tickets should not exceed £25. This external visit will form the subject of detailed class discussion, and will be connected to assessment. We endeavor to keep student costs low so we take advantage of group ticket discounts and provide advice on cost saving measures.
