Summary module description:
This module will explore aspects of musical leadership in educational settings through a combination of practical workshops, theoretical investigation and review of classroom practice.

Aims:

  • To explore collaborative projects, performance practices and ensemble music making in school and community, from the perspective of the amateur and the professional musician
  • To develop skills of communication and leadership in music practitioners

Assessable learning outcomes:
Demonstrate a clear sense of the issues around music making, in both formal and informal settings
Demonstrate an awareness of the relationship between planning and successful implementation in collaborative projects
Demonstrate awareness of the role of music making in the promotion of musical learning

Additional outcomes:
The module aims to encourage students to develop communication and presentation skills and to become independent in their thinking and analysis. Contribution to seminars will not be assessed but each student is expected to take an active role in seminars generally and to contribute one prepared presentation on a topic to be agreed with the tutor.

The module has four main strands:

  • The context of arts and education
  • Development, planning and evaluation
  • Inclusion in music making
  • Leadership and facilitation

Other information on summative assessment:
One assignment equivalent of 5,000 words. The topic and title will be negotiated with the module convenor.

Formative assessment methods:
Students will give a short presentation to the class on their draft assignment, they will engage in peer review and the tutor will provide feedback during class and tutorial.
