Summary module description:

Aims:
The overall aim of the module is to introduce the student to advanced topics in physical chemistry related to Molecular Structure, Atmospheric Chemistry and Surface Phenomena.

Assessable learning outcomes:

Students should understand the factors determining surface structure and catalytic activity and should be able to explain how differences in activity are found between different surfaces. Students should understand the nature of the chemical bond in term of the LCAO approximation and should be able to interpret simple molecular electronic spectra. Students should understand the factors that determine the impact of surface reactions on atmospheric aerosols as well as modern techniques suitable for investigation of those factors.

D Nutt (7) Atomic and Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy
The linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO). Quantitative approach to LCAO: energies and wave functions. Atomic Structure and Spectroscopy: vector representation and coupling of angular momentum; term symbols. Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy: term symbols; complexity of molecular electronic spectroscopy; vibrational coarse structure (Franck-Condon Principle); rovibrational fine structure.

Solid surfaces and their interaction with the gas phase: Geometry and electronic structure of solid surfaces; Chemical and physical adsorption processes; Adsorption isotherms and models thereof; Kinetic models for surface reactions.

C Pfrang (7) Atmospheric Aerosols
Atmospheric aerosols affect climate and impact significantly on human health. This course discusses the importance of aerosols for physical and chemical processes occurring in the atmosphere and gives an overview of aerosol characteristics and properties including composition, size distribution and function as cloud condensation nuclei. Particular focus is the relative importance of surface vs. bulk processes in atmospheric aerosols. The course will then move on to methods that allow study of atmospheric aerosols: levitation techniques for investigation of single aerosol particles will be discussed together with further modern techniques

Other information on summative assessment:
Students will attend 3 tutorials & 3 workshops on the material covered in this module. Attendance is compulsory at both. A tutorial comprises both written work and oral contribution. A maximum of 20 marks is available for the written work and 5 marks for the oral contribution for each tutorial set.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    A mark of 40% overall.

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Reassessment will be held in August and will be by examination only worth 100%.

    Final year students are not eligible to resit this module unless they have failed their degree programme overall.
