Summary module description:
Integrated design methods 2A, for students following the Study Abroad option in Part 2. The module extends graphic communication skills through the integrated application of design practice, history, theory and technology to project work across a range of print and digital genres. It builds on the integrated approach established in TY1INT through the development of design skills and the application of theory and professional knowledge to a range of genres and applications. Projects are structured to complement the theoretical and conceptual work in TY2INTBSA, providing opportunities for application and exploration of the relationship between theory and practice.

Aims:
The module aims to develop an insightful approach to graphic communication practice, integrated with and informed by historical, theoretical, and professional insight, and competence in technology across a range of genres.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students should be able to:
- Conceptualise and synthesize solutions to project briefs through analysis, research, planning, idea generation, and implementation
-Realise effective design solutions for project briefs using an appropriate range of hand, photographic, and computer tools
- Present design proposals professionally for different audiences and applications
- Substantiate their design decisions with reference to relevant theoretical principles, research, professional practices, and technological/production criteria
- Evaluate and analyse design solutions in relation to theoretical, professional, and technical considerations

Additional outcomes:
Students should also be able to engage with research to inform their project work, defend their approach to a problem, and make an effective verbal and visual presentation of their ideas. The projects are structured so that they are informed by TY2INTBSA.

Outline content:
Students will typically work on several studio projects in the Autumn Term, of varying length and complexity, some of which may be collaborative. Revision of work for resubmission will take place in Summer Term.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Teaching methods may encompass:
- Self-directed reading and research; in-class exercises and presentations, technical workshops, and practical design projects
- Each larger project may be comprised of several component assignments that draw variously on these teaching and learning methods
- Students will work independently, in small groups, and in full group sessions.

Each project is started with a plenary briefing session where the brief is set and the ground rules are laid down. Briefs are written to encourage solutions that spring from an analysis of the problem or task, rather than from a particular stylistic or formal approach. Projects will vary in the degree to which a particular technological approach is required. Students are expected to use studio and computing facilities within the department wherever possible during projects. Seminars (up to twice weekly), task-based learning and technical demonstrations are used to introduce concepts and approaches, which inform project work. Interim criticism and other contact with tutors is through a system of scheduled workshops and small group sessions. Final feedback usually involves a plenary session and either individual or small group feedback sessions.

Other information on summative assessment:
The module consists of four equally weighted ‘units’. Projects are completed during each term and submitted according to an established schedule. Feedback for each project is given during the project; further feedback (including 'monitoring' feedback in the form of a banded percentage) is given after initial project submission. A percentage of the project mark may be allocated to appropriate attendance, engagement and participation. A body of work, consisting of project(s) in the module, is resubmitted in Summer Term and initially assigned an aggregated banded percentage derived from individual banded percentages for each project. This aggregated banded percentage is then reviewed by a panel of assessors in light of the resubmitted work, leading to the assignment of a single module mark for the body of work. The final mark may fall within or outside of the initially assigned aggregated banded percentage.

Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:

Non-standard penalties apply to the late submission of Part 2 practical work that is panel assessed in Summer Term (i.e. work in TY2INTA/TY2INTASA and TY2PRA2). 10% of the total marks available for the work will be deducted from the final mark where work is submitted up to 24 hours late. Thereafter the mark falls to zero. Assessors may exercise discretion in the application of penalties.
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.
  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
