Summary module description:

The Management Case Studies module consists of two projects related to the appraisal and management of rural property. The nature of the projects will vary from year to year, but each will focus on the application of theory and technical knowledge to real-life situations on farms, estates or other rural sites.


Aims:
The aim of this module is to assist students to develop the application of management concepts to real life rural business situations. The module will develop the student’s ability to utilise the knowledge, understanding and skills developed in other modules and to integrate this knowledge through projects based on applied property and business examples.

Assessable learning outcomes:
• The application of problem-solving skills; identification of issues, and interaction with owners, managers and advisors.
• The critical evaluation, selection and application of appropriate quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques.
• Written and oral presentation skills in reporting to managers and others.
• The application of common management techniques to real life scenarios

Additional outcomes:
Students are encouraged to handle a number of problems simultaneously, to prioritise their workload and meet strict deadlines.

Outline content:

The module involves two discrete case studies, each intended to replicate a typical (rural) professional scenario. Students will also undertake a skills based formative assessment.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Each case study usually involves a pre-briefing, a half-day site visit to a local venue, the preparation of an appropriate solution within a set time-limit, and a de-briefing session. A different member of staff is responsible for the management of each case study and students are encouraged to discuss with them the preparation of their solution and their approach to the problem. It is recognised that, although the case studies are individual and discrete, the learning experience increases throughout the module, and through detailed group and individual feedback at each stage. Students are expected to demonstrate that they are assimilating the necessary skills and techniques as the module progresses.

Other information on summative assessment:

Students will be required to submit two pieces of work of appropriate length (Case Study 1 approximately 2000 words; Case Study 2 approximately 3000 words) and style. Oral presentations might form some of the assessment. Case studies might involve group work. Case Study 1 accounts for 40% of the module assessment and Case Study 2 accounts for 60%.
