Integration and application of core and specialised knowledge. For distinct elements; Opportunities Seminar; European Field Trip; Industry Challenge; Real Estate Strategy Game


Aims:

The aim of this module is to integrate and apply both core and specialised knowledge obtained in the MSc Real Estate Programme and to demonstrate originality in the understanding and systematic application of this knowledge.


Assessable learning outcomes:

- A systematic understanding of the issues and problems that need to be resolved in order to manage a problem

- evaluate critically land and property issues in their wider economic, social, political and legal context

- Deal with complex ‘real world’ property market issues both systematically and creatively and to make sound judgements in the absence of complete data

- The ability to evaluate and critique competing solutions.

- The ability to formulate testable hypotheses

- A comprehensive understanding of applicable techniques in the context of the problem set 

- Implement tasks at a professional level and generate a professional assessment

- Collection and critical evaluation of property market information

- Demonstrate self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems and act as part of a team in planning and implementing tasks

Outline content:

The module has four distinct elements. 



- A non-assessed one day industry led opportunities seminar which provides necessary background in the analysis of alternative property sectors.  

- A five day European field trip to a case study market including a structured programme of lectures, presentations and project visits in the case study city, a structured professional project brief and the professional presentation and reporting of findings

- An industry challenge where teams of students are assigned a task by an industry partner. The assessed output involves both a professional presentation to the industry partner, and report. 

- A one week integrated group strategy game

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

The module will include 3 assignments. One minor group assignment involving the development of a short presentation and professional report based on the field trip case study (7,000 words Week 6 Summer Term 40% of Module Credit) one minor group assignment involving the development of a short presentation and professional report based on a challenge set by an assigned industry partner (7,000 words Week 9 Summer Term 30% of Module Credit) and one minor assignment in the form of a group integrated strategy game (7,000 words Week 8 Summer Term 30% of Module Credit). All word counts are for guidance only. Unless the specific requirement of an individual assignment states that the word limit is strict, then there is some discretion with the guide length.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

The pass-mark for this module is 50%. 


Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment will be as follows: Field Trip – Report based project involving the construction of an investment case for a real estate asset in a market the candidate is familiar with. Industry Challenge – Report based on a real world industry set brief – Real Estate Game – Essay which explores the use of game theory for real estate investment strategy. These reassessments are subject to variation by the Examination Board where appropriate.
