Summary module description:

The Rural Projects module consists of three projects related to the appraisal and management of rural property. The nature of the projects will vary from year to year, but each will focus on the application of theory and technical knowledge to real-life situations on farms, estates or other rural sites.


Aims:
The aim of the module is to assist students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-life professional situations. They will be encouraged to combine knowledge, understanding and skills gained in other modules to develop appropriate techniques for identifying problems, determining feasible solutions to them and presenting the solutions in writing or orally.

Assessable learning outcomes:

• Apply theory to professional situations in rural land management. 

• Identify problems and develop solutions. 

• Present information and advice in an appropriate format for a particular audience.


Additional outcomes:

Students will develop their time management skills, be encouraged to handle a number of problems simultaneously and learn to prioritise their workload and meet strict deadlines. 


Outline content:

The module consists of three discrete projects, each of which will usually involve a pre-briefing, a half-day site visit to a local venue, the preparation of an appropriate solution within a set time limit, and a de-briefing session. Marks are distributed equally between the three projects. 


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
A member of staff is responsible for the management of each project and students are encouraged to discuss with them the preparation of their solution and their approach to the problem. It is recognised that, although the projects are individual and discrete, the learning experience increases throughout the module and through detailed group and individual feedback at each stage. Students are expected to demonstrate that they are assimilating the necessary skills and techniques as the module progresses.

Other information on summative assessment:

The summative assessment will consist of three project reports. The word guides and weights for this is as follows:



Project report 1: 2000 words (weighted at 20%)

Project report 2: 2500 words (weighted at 35%)

Project report 3: 3000 words (weighted at 45%)

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy. 

•  where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

•  where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
