Summary module description:
This module is delivered at University of Reading and University of Reading Malaysia.

Aims:

The module provides students with an opportunity to apply subject knowledge developed in the programme during part 2, building on part 1, and to obtain and apply new knowledge in the real estate sector, informing their choice of pathway in part 3. The module develops research and information gathering and analytical skills as well as encouraging independent learning. It also incorporates exercises in career management skills. 


Assessable learning outcomes:

At the end of the module the students will be able to:

- conduct a literature review with citations;

- present results, support an argument and formulate defensible conclusions;

- demonstrate analytical skills within the real estate sector;

- use subject knowledge in the solution of a complex real estate market problem;

- produce a professional business report;

- understand the roles, skills and work available in different areas of the real estate industry.


Additional outcomes:

Additionally the module will: 

- Assist students with the development of IT and software skills relevant to the project work;

- Assist students with their curriculum and career decisions;

- Enable students to reflect on their strengths, skills and development needs.



 


Outline content:

The module content will typically cover the following areas:





- Research and information gathering, culminating in a research paper;

- Reading and data gathering relevant to a real estate market problem, culminating in a professional business report;

- Career management skills.



The content will help to inform the choice of pathway for part 3 that each student makes. The topics covered will reflect the evolution of each subject area.



The career management skills exercises comprise the following: study of different roles in the real estate sector, a self-appraisal, a reflective exercise comparing roles with own skills and the preparation of a covering letter


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The teaching and learning methods will include:

- Briefing lectures;

- Project surgeries;

- Project tutorials;

- Online support and related activities.

Each project is worth 13.5 credits and is likely to be assessed using the following methods and elements:





1. Individual research paper: indicative overall length 3,500 words (45%);

2. Project or presentation or test, as appropriate to the chosen specialism (45%);

3. Career management skills exercises (10%):

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.



·  where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;



·  where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
