Summary module description:
Students must pass either PYMIN1 or PYMIN3 to be assessed on this module. Additionally it is also preferable for students to have passed PYMTM1 and PYMTM2 prior to this module.


  • To enable students to advance further in the application of evidence-based psychological theory and practice by training in new therapies with a less established (but nevertheless still present) evidence base
  • To apply the evidence-based principles to areas of psychological therapy in which there is currently no evidence-base (e.g., patients with obsessive compulsive disorder and psychosis)
  • To enable students to use advanced evidence-based psychological treatments for cases with multiple psychological disorders
  • To train students in the use of advanced evidence-based psychological approaches that cut across specific diagnoses (i.e., 'transdiagnostic' disorders)
  • To constructively discuss and critically appraise the clinical work of themselves and others presented in small discussion groups and/or role-plays.

Assessable learning outcomes:
Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Understand advanced evidence-based psychological theories for multiple, co-occurring psychological disorders. This will be assessed via the Knowledge Assessment.

Outline content:

. Workshops equating to four full days on evidence-based psychological theory and treatments delivered by recognised national and international experts in the field. These workshops will include topics that cut across specific diagnoses, such as: CBT for perfectionism.

2. Discussion groups and/or role-plays within the workshops to discuss the psychological theory and treatment with the opportunity to present their own case material.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Workshops/small group work; audio and video-tape; role-play exercises and discussion; 'homework'; case material preparation and presentation. All teaching will be in a group setting.

Knowledge Assessment

There will be one 2500 word essay with the content relating to the workshops associated with this module. Students are expected to be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of advanced evidence-based psychological theories

Requirements for a pass:
50%. A minimum of 80% attendance is required.

Reassessment arrangements:
Students who do not obtain the required pass mark in the assessed work will be given the opportunity to re-sit, on one occassion. The re-sit grade cannot exceed 50%.
