Summary module description:
Health Psychology

This module aims to:
- enable students to study selected Health Psychology topics in depth;
- provide knowledge of current research and experience in critical evaluation;
- develop students ability to study independently.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module the student will be able to
1.Critically analyse key concepts used to understand health behaviours.
2. Critically evaluate evidence that investigates these key concepts.
3. Synthesise different approaches to explaining specific health behaviours.

Additional outcomes:

Students will gain experience of working in small groups.  The module will offer the opportunity for students to develop their academic skills including critical and analytical thinking, synthesis, and application of theory.  It will also offer students the opportunity to develop broader skills, including oral presentation skills, reading proficiency and time management. 

Outline content:

The module comprises 7 2-hour seminars. Using short lectures, student-led presentations, discussion, and small group work, this module will explore key topics within Health Psychology. The module is topic based, with relevant theories/concepts being described, applied and critically evaluated.

Teaching on this module will assume that all students have previously taken PY1AP Applied Psychology.

Other information on summative assessment:
This module is assessed through coursework (20%) and a final exam (80%).
The 1.5-hour Summer Exam will require students to answer 1 essay question on topics covered in the module.
Coursework will comprise an oral presentation plus written summary.

Formative assessment methods:
Students have the opportunity to provide the module convenor with up to two essay plans for comment and feedback in preparation for the exam.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
