Summary module description:
PY2PS1 Personality & Social Psychology 1

To familiarise students with theory and research on a selection of core topics in personality and social psychology.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:

•Describe key areas of research in social psychology
•Critically evaluate some pieces of relevant research and techniques discussed in lectures
•Demonstrate a broad understanding of topics within social psychology, in the form of multiple choice tests and weekly continuous assessment

Outline content:
Topics include social cognition; social perception; attitudes and attitude change; social influence; intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
(a) Lectures on personality and social psychology.
(b) Online discussion forum following lectures
(c) Recommended reading in social psychology.
(d) Continuous online assessment of students' understanding of the material covered in lectures to support learning and preparation for end-of-term tests.

Other information on summative assessment:
This module is assessed by coursework (30%) and an end-of-term multiple choice test (70%).
Coursework involves continuous online assessment of students' understanding of the material covered in lectures.

Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
