Summary module description:

The aims of the module are that students should further their knowledge of the structure and function of the nervous system, and to bring their knowledge to bear on understanding areas such as motivational systems, reward, neurotransmitters, emotion, and the action of drugs.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse research on the neuroscience of topics such as emotion, pain and cognition
2. Appriase key theoretical explanations of reward processing and psychopharmacology, with critical reference to the literature
3. Critically evaluate research approaches and theoretical perspectives of cognitive control

Outline content:
Topics to be covered might include:
- Methods in cognitive neuroscience.
- Neural bases of cognition, for example, attention, working memory.
- Neurotransmitters, motivation and reward systems

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
(a) Lectures on neuroscience.
(b) Online discussion forum following lectures.
(c) Recommended reading in neuroscience.
(d) Continuous exercises tied to course content, including web-based exercises.
(e) Seminars on selected neuroscience topics
(f) Written essays addressing neuroscience topics

Other information on summative assessment:
This module is assessed by a combination of coursework (30%), classroom tests (35%) and examination (35%).
Coursework includes 1 essay, prepared for your seminar tutor (15%) and continuous online assessment of your understanding of the material covered in lectures (15%).
There are two end-of-term classroom multiple-choice tests, one at the end of Autumn term, one at the end of Spring term.
The 1.5-hour written Summer Exam will require you to answer 2 questions on topics covered in the module: one on Autumn Term topics, one on Spring Term topics.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
