Summary module description:

Work-based learning (WBL) has been promoted as particularly useful for professionals in full time employment because they are enabled to address issues arising during practice by investigating pertinent literature, devising potential learning solutions and implementing and evaluating them in practice.  


This module will enable healthcare professionals to:

  • Critically analyse current competency and working practice;

  • Identify learning objectives, set and agree a learning contract;

  • Develop a learning plan with clearly defined outcomes;

  • Improve ongoing critical evaluation of practice;

  • Provide evidence in a Personal Development Portfolio that learning outcomes have been achieved.


Within the student’s defined area of professional development at work, the module will enable students to demonstrate:

  • knowledge/understanding/ awareness/intellectual curiosity

  • that they can apply their knowledge

  • the skill of analysis

  • the skill of synthesis/creativity

  • the skill of evaluation

Assessable learning outcomes:

The following assessable learning outcomes will be evaluated:

  • knowledge of the student's chosen field of work

  • critical understanding of its literature

  • coherent understanding of the practitioner’s role in the area of practice

  • analytical approach to case studies in a clear and appropriate style

  • demonstration of the required competencies in the area of practice

Outline content:

The WBL module does not provide any teaching resources itself. Practitioners will be encouraged to identify appropriate training to meet their own professional needs, identified in their learning contract. These could include:

  • Non-credit bearing CPD courses and study days

  • Conferences

  • Work based training

  • Structured reading

  • Professional Competency frameworks


Students will have regular tutorials with their academic tutor to determine the focus, set the learning contract and assessment approach.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Learning will be supported by:

  • Module handbook

  • Access to Blackboard, the university’s virtual learning environment, which will have key materials to support the development of learning contracts, reflective writing and competency assessment

  • Full access to the university’s library facilities

  • Access to a tutor to support development

Contact hours include a series of tutorials and seminars that complement the work-based learning undertaken (200 hours total).  These contact hours can been undertaking in Autumn, Spring and/or Summer terms and/or in vacations.  For simplicity, contact hours for this module are shown in a single term as an example only.

Other information on summative assessment:

A flexible approach will be taken to the assessment to enable it to be tailored to the individual’s personal development plans and their learning contract. It is anticipated that a portfolio containing the following key elements will be required:

  • Review of relevant competency

  • Learning contract

  • Log of learning at work

  • Reflective accounts / case reports

  • Documentary evidence of learning

  • Peer review


Students will be required to submit elements of their portfolio for formative assessment and e-feedback prior to the final summative assessment.

Formative assessment methods:

Penalties for late submission:

The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy. 

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;

  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Length of examination:

Requirements for a pass:

The module will be assessed based on the Marking Criteria and Classification Frame Work for Taught Postgraduate Programmes, with a pass mark set at 50%. There will be a requirement to pass all agreed components of the portfolio assessment.

Reassessment arrangements:

Students will be able to resubmit coursework in line with current University Regulations, and within 3 months of notification on the requirement to resubmit.
