Summary module description:

Aims:
The module aims to: 1) familiarise the students with a range of speech, language and communication assessments (standardised and informal) for children; 2) to enable students to gain knowledge of how to critically evaluate and administer different assessments; 3) enable students to carry out detailed linguistic analyses and present these analyses orally and in written format; 4) to support students with their data collection planning.

Assessable learning outcomes:
• Demonstrate knowledge of a range of standardized and non-standardised speech and language assessments for children;
• Carry out advanced linguistic analyses of a range of the child’s abilities and be able to communicate this knowledge to others
• Interpret appropriately standardised and non-standardised assessments
• Integrate theoretical linguistic knowledge with clinical applications

• Insight into how to conduct a data collection session efficiently

Outline content:
The students will get familiarised with planning assessment of speech, language and communication; the available standardised and non-standardised assessments and how to administer/interpret these in the clinical context for children with language impairment.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
There will be one 2- hour introductory lecture. The students will watch videos of 2 children. Each video is seen for two consecutive session. There will be a 2- hour planning and preparation session prior to the first video of each client being shown. There will also be a 2-hour seminar after the 2nd session for each child.

Other information on summative assessment:
A 2,000 word report based on the 2nd child, to be submitted in the Summer term.

Formative assessment methods:
Students will get feedback during seminars and practical classes on their interpretation of the data.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
