Summary module description:
This is an introduction into child language acquisition.

Aims:
This module aims to provide students with an understanding of language development in typically developing children, and introduce current theories in child language acquisition.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:
- Identify the main stages of language development;
- Demonstrate a knowledge and critical understanding of principles and issues in child language acquisition as well as an understanding of the stages of language development in typically developing children;
- Synthesise ideas and controversies in the field of first language acquisition;
- Engage in critical reflective argument.

Additional outcomes:
Students will learn to carry out computer-aided analyses of child language data. They will be able to make connections between theoretically driven ideas of child language acquisition and clinical data.

Outline content:
The first part of the module concentrates on language development in typically developing children between the age of 2 and 4. The second part of the course covers theories of child language acquisition.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Five three-hour lectures once a week for 5 weeks, and 5 one-hour practical sessions over the same weeks.

The coursework consists of a classroom test in the Spring term.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
