Summary module description:

This module aims to develop entrepreneurial skills and provide students with a range of entrepreneurial ideas and tools to ensure effective identification and development of business opportunities. This module will equip students with:

  • Inspiration and confidence to discover and identify business opportunities to market;

  • Knowledge about tools to exploit and develop business opportunities;

  • Skills to validate business opportunities.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, it is expected that students should be able to:

  • Analytically discover and identify business opportunities to market;

  • Employ entrepreneurial tools to exploit and develop business opportunities;

  • Critically reflect on their business start-up techniques using the Business Model Canvas and the Lean thinking approach;

  • Apply Ideation and Lean Start-up creativity techniques to create and validate a business.

Additional outcomes:

The module is an opportunity for learners to develop their entrepreneurial and creative skills and their ability to work in groups to identify a business opportunity and potentially start a business. 

Outline content:

The key topics covered in this module are:

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities: setting a scene  

  • The Business Model Canvas

  • Entrepreneurial value proposition

  • Lean start-up

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The principal teaching will take place in one day-long interactive workshop, supported with pre-workshop readings and active experimental learning on the day.

Other information on summative assessment:

For their summative assessment, 100% is derived from a team presentation on the day of the workshop. A panel will judge the team presentation.
