Summary module description:

Aims:
This module represents the student’s opportunity to evaluate and reflect on the challenges presented specifically by the management of people within their own organisational situations. Typically the challenges associated with recruiting, day to day managing, incentivising and developing people and the human resource challenges presented by the management of change and the impact of the organisations culture from both an organisational – i.e. peer point of view and from a personal point of view

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
• Propose appropriate approaches for analysing current management practices at an organisational level and conduct such an analysis.
• Recommend changes to management practices at an organisational level based on formal analysis of these
• Propose appropriate approaches for assessing their own management practices especially in relation to the management of people and conduct such an assessment
• Assess their career progression to date and develop appropriate career goals
• Develop options and select appropriate strategies for achieving identified career goals
• Identify learning goals and approaches to enable management practice at an individual or organisational level to be informed by current thinking
• Thence to justify the rationale for personal development plans and continuous professional development and devise a self development plan in this context
• Integrate the art of continuous reflection into their management practice.

Additional outcomes:
The module is directed towards developing the technique of evaluation and to stimulate reflection. Developing these techniques will support the students as mangers: appreciating the broader picture of any management situation whilst being able to formulate the detailed approach that may be needed to address it. These techniques will assist students to focus on their own development at the same time, identifying their own strengths and weaknesses and reflecting on how they might change and develop as managers.

Outline content:
The module is divided into two sections:

In the first part of the module students are encouraged to build upon the year one and two modules to reflect on work based “case examples” as observers of peer behaviours and organisational performance in their own organisations. They are then expected to re-evaluate and reflect on them in the light of conventional academic learning and by gathering practitioner based information as appropriate.

The Organisational Focus Assignment will be expected to conclude with a critical evaluation on how effectively practices (or rather a selection of such practices) are in their organisation, why and how that should change or a justification of why it is appropriate and should not change. Students will be expected to have read more widely and have a view of their own organisation’s abilities and performance in the context of other organisations, possibly in other sectors.

In the second part of this module students are encouraged to evaluate and reflect upon their personal effectiveness – their behavioural competency skill sets. They are expected to choose an individual approach to evaluating their own strengths and weaknesses in areas such as how well they perform in teams and what roles they play; how well they communicate and present themselves and their work; what their attitudes to ethical issues are; the challenges and their performance in terms of integrity and fairness in decision making; how effective and efficient, they are, how motivated, adaptable and flexible they are and their attitude to continuing self and professional development.

The Individual Focus Assignment will require reflection as to the effectiveness of the student as an individual manager within their own organisation, why and how that might need to change coupled with a plan for further self development.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Students are provided with a personal effectiveness text book and guidance on Blackboard which details what is required in each part of the module. There are 2 workshops associated with the delivery of this module, each is designed to present the key features of undertaking such a piece of work. Workshops are from 09.30 till 17.00
