Summary module description:

Aims:
The purpose of this module is to provide an understanding of:

  • the distinct natures of management and leadership
  • effective managerial and leadership behaviour
  • issues associated with worker motivation
  • organisational control and power and

to enable students to apply this learning to their own professional environment.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • critically assess the attributes, qualities and impact of a successful manager and debate the meaning of management and its value to the organisation
  • compare the main theories of motivation and evaluate their relevance to particular work situations
  • critically evaluate the relationship between motivation and rewards
  • discuss critically the nature of power and control in organisational contexts
  • appraise the concept of empowerment
  • evaluate the meaning and importance of leadership in organisations
  • contrast theories of leadership and assess the effectiveness of leadership in context
  • formulate good practice with respect to the motivation and leadership of people
  • apply these ideas effectively to their own personal development as managers

Additional outcomes:

  • Oral communication skills should be developed as a result of class discussion and presentations
  • Analytical and evaluation skills should be developed through group discussions, whether in class or e-enabled
  • Application of academic concepts to their professional environment should cause students to reflect on their work as managers

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Workshop
There are two full day workshopS. The workshop format uses a blend of interactive lecturing, structured class discussion, group working, presentations and case studies. Maximum use of active learning is encouraged.

Self Managed Learning
Students are provided with the very latest text books and accompanying CDs, web enabled access keys and publisher resources as available with each new edition. Workshop leaders will direct students to the use of these resources at the outset using a guided learning path.

Group Tutorial Support
Students receive group tutorial support within the workshop environment. Workshop leaders discuss the assignment with the group and offer support and guidance as to what is expected.

Individual Tutorial Support
Students will receive individual tutorial support on request.
