Summary module description:

This module helps students understand the difference between management and leadership by exploring how teams are led in different types of organisations and the impact of creative thinking when motivating teams. Entrepreneurial leadership allows students to consider how to create opportunities for innovative thinking when working in established organisations.



The organisations this module focuses range from entrepreneurial start-ups to established family businesses, large corporates, public sector organisations and charities.



The module allows students to map out and reflect on their own leadership development and identify areas they can focus on. 


Aims:

This module introduces students to the characteristics and skills that underpin Entrepreneurial leadership. Using scholarly literature and case studies this module discusses how this form of leadership is applied in difference contexts, from family businesses to corporates and start up-firms. The module has a strong practical application and uses real life case studies.


Assessable learning outcomes:

Understanding components of entrepreneurial leadership and the traits and behaviours that underpin effective leadership.



 



Recognise how leadership influences and is influenced by the structure and culture of the organisation.



 



Distinction between managing and leading teams.



 



Understand the impact of diversity in the quality decision-making.

 


Additional outcomes:

Students will learn to work independently under pressure of time, and to organise diverse empirical material.



 



Students will demonstrate their development in building their leadership skills, ability to provide constructive feedback.



 



Cultivate their strengths as reflective individuals.


Outline content:

1) Entrepreneurial leadership: what is it? Differentiating leadership from management.

2) Leading in different organisations; corporates, SMEs, family firms, voluntary organisations.

3) Leadership traits & emotional intelligence.

5) Innovation and creativity the dividends for leadership.

6) Inclusive leadership.

7) Branding your leadership.

8) Why do we need to think about diversity in leadership?

9) Growing from management to leadership to greater leadership.

10) Review of the course.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Detailed guidance on the main topics of the syllabus and key references are provided in 8 x 3 hour sessions of lectures, seminar questions and discussions. Students are required to do a significant amount of reading of journal articles and chapters of books along with case studies.

Coursework



One 2,000 word essay submitted by a specified date. The essay is selected from a choice of eight broadly defined topics which encourage students to use a variety of sources and which provide a focus consistent with the overall aims of the module.

Length of examination:

One two-hour examination with a weight of 50%, taken in the Summer term.


Requirements for a pass:

A weighted average mark of coursework and examination of 50%.
