Summary module description:

This module provides an introduction to the field of human resource management at both the level of strategy and also of practice.  It is relevant for any students considering a career where they will be managing others or for those interested in a career specialising in HRM.


Aims:

This module provides an overview of the principles of Human Resource Management (HRM) and its main practices. It provides a grounding in the key constructs and principles in HRM so that these may examined from comparative perspective in MMM079 or from critical perspective in MMM048 (Managing people and organisations). It considers approaches to HR strategy as well as key HR processes including selection, motivation, development and performance management.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students should be able to:



 



1. To critically evaluate the implications of viewing people as ‘human resources’



 



2. To understand the origins of what is now known as HRM and identify the principles upon which it is based



 



3. To compare and contrast the different approaches organisations might adopt to HR strategy



 



4. To explain the objectives and nature of specific areas of HR policy and practice - recruitment and selection; motivation and reward; and career management



 



5. To have an awareness of how HR adds value to the organisation.


Additional outcomes:

The module provides an overview of HRM for those new to the topic who might be studying other degrees or who wish to specialise in the field of International HRM.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures are used to provide the knowledge base in conjunction with independent reading. Students will be expected to share their ideas and contribute to classroom discussions in lectures and in tutorials. Group work plays a part in this module and students will need to work with their group to share their assessed work.

Summative Assessment Methods:

Summative assessment- Examinations:

One 2-hour unseen written paper with a weight of 50% in the overall assessment of the module. 


Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Students submit coursework in the Autumn term accounting for 50% of the module mark. The Coursework comprises a group presentation accounting for 10% of module mark (usually week 8) and also an individual essay and reflection of no more than 3000 words accounting for 40% of module mark.  Word counts are +/- 10%. The individual assignment is submitted in week 10. 


Formative assessment methods:

Lectures and seminars contain interactive exercises and these allow for formative feedback.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A weighted average mark of coursework and examination of 50%.

Reassessment arrangements:
By examination only (one 2-hour unseen written paper) in August/September. Coursework will not be included in the re-assessment.
