Summary module description:
To prepare students to work internationally in an HR department where transformational programmes will be a part of organisational life OR to equip students who become general managers within transforming organisations.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the course students should be able to:
1. Identify organisational and individual factors for change.
2. Provide an argued critique of the main models of change and their applicability within global contexts.
3. Articulate the role of organisational development within large organisations and its links to motivation and commitment.
4. Describe a range of leadership styles and appropriateness in certain organisational and cultural contexts.

Additional outcomes:
The course also aims to:
1. Give students considering a career in human resource or general management a critical appreciation of role of organisational development and the challenge of managing change in international organisations.
2. Develop skills required for international or expatriate working via practical group work in multi-cultural teams and self-awareness.
3. Enable students to reflect on their personal learning and future development needs as an HR and/or change practitioner.

1. Organisational factors for change
2. Change models in context and the role of the change facilitator
3. Individual factors for change and facilitation skills
4. Organisational culture, values and ethics
5. Engagement and commitment
6. Linking strategy, leadership, engagement & commitment
7. Managing distributed teams
8. Managing & communicating change
9. Guest speaker on practical application

Global context:
this is provided by the use of international cases and examples, and the learning methods as outlined below.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Lectures are used to provide a knowledge base. In this module this is particularly supplemented by the use of case studies and visiting speakers. The cross-cultural nature of the student body is also used as a learning resource, by requiring students to work in cross-cultural groups and to reflect on their experiences.

Written assignment including essay 2500 words. 

A word count of 10% excess is allowed for the written assignment. Written work beyond the 10% excess will be discounted in the grading of the assignment.


Written assignment includes a portfolio of self-awareness assessment and peer feedback. Presentation: 40% relative percentage Written assignment: 60% relative percentage
