Summary module description:
Managing Operations and Processes covers key concepts and theories within the areas of operations management, service operations, process management and project management. It is designed to introduce students to the challenges facing organisations in the delivery of goods and/or services and to explore current approaches to meeting those challenges.

The aims of the module are to:

• Introduce core concepts and theories within operations and process management
• Explore approaches to the design, operation and improvement of the processes and systems through which organisations deliver goods and services.
• Develop insights into the management of operations in organisations today.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On completion of the module, students should be able to:

1. Explain and debate the role of operations and processes in modern business
2. Critically evaluate current approaches to managing operations and processes
3. Select and apply key concepts and theories from operations and process management in order to design delivery processes and systems
4. Select and apply key concepts and theories to analyse and resolve operations- and process-related problems and issues
5. Critically assess selected academic and professional literature relevant to the design and management of operations and processes.
6. Communicate information effectively in the required format in the evaluation of operations and process-related topics

Additional outcomes:
In addition, the module aims to encourage development of oral communication skills in both formal and informal environments. Activities are designed to encourage independent and collaborative learning skills, including reflection. Students are encouraged to develop IT skills through the use of web and other resources, including Blackboard.

Outline content:
The module draws on operations management, service operations, process management and project management. Topics to be covered include:

• Operations and business strategy
• Supply chain design and management
• Process design
• Resource planning and control
• Capacity, inventory and flow management, including lean synchronisation
• Quality and improvement
• Risk management
• Project management

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
A blended approach will be used with core material being covered in lectures in which class interaction will be encouraged. These will be supported by seminars which will include individual and group presentations on suitable topics.

Other information on summative assessment:
The coursework has a weight of 40 percent of the final assessment mark, with an individual components contributing 40 percent of the final mark.

The coursework will take the form of an individual written assignment. The student will be required to choose a theme from the module, analyse that theme using appropriate literature and illustrate with of examples of the topic in practice. The individual assignment includes the student’s reflections on the module.

Formative assessment methods:
Seminar presentations and group discussion.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    Length of examination:
    One 2-hour unseen written paper with a weight of 60 percent of the final assessment mark to be held during the summer term examination period.

    Requirements for a pass:
    A weighted average mark of coursework and examination of 40%.

    Reassessment arrangements:
    By examination.
