Summary module description:

An introductory module acting as a “taster session” for the programme; over the course of an intensive 3-day workshop the key basic concepts of management and organisation including the major processes organisations carry out in their day-to-day running, and the concept of management and leadership within an organisation, including differences between managers and leaders will be introduced. Students will be given the opportunity to develop an understanding of self-management, team work and different management frameworks which can be used to categorise management styles used within organisations.  Additionally, the content of the programme, expectations and commitments will be introduced.


Aims:

To identify students of a suitably high academic calibre from the MPharm programme, with a drive to increase their understanding of management processes within organisations and develop their transferrable skills for use in external organisations in the future. To give a solid grounding in basic management styles, structures and skills used in a variety of organisations, and to highlight the similarities used in a range of management areas. Also, to provide a platform for later CBA modules and provide an exciting and inspiring taster for potential students.

By the end of the module participants should:



•             Have an understanding of organisational activities



•             Have a basic understanding of management and leadership in organisations



•       Have an understanding of managing self and others in order to complete tasks and achieve targets



•             Understand and be able to apply basic management frameworks in order to evaluate management and organisations



•             Have an understanding of the challenges of working in teams and team dynamics, decision-making and managing self and others



•             Knowledge and understanding key organisational practices related to managing people and how they drive or inhibit performance



•             Ability to reflect on and evaluate people-based issues and develop logical, justified solutions



•             Ability to apply concepts to help understand organisational and management practice



•             An awareness and reflection of personal development

Although there is no formal assessment for the module participants will be expected to participate in discussions and a short presentation at the end of the module.


Outline content:

The workshop combines taught and experiential methods and will focus on:



•             Line management and leadership in organisations – developing an awareness of the roles, responsibilities and challenges for managers in organisations



•             Understanding of key organisational activities (including role of marketing, operations, finance, strategy)



•             Organisations – the application of basic frameworks to understand organisations



•             Team-work – managing self and others to get the task done and develop an understanding basic team building theory.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

A blended learning approach comprising a 3-day workshop, facilitated on-line learning, personal study and assessment. The workshop will comprise a combination of face to face teaching, individual and group activities and the use of a simulation exercise aimed at developing management skills in team-working, using information effectively to make decisions, communicate with others and managing self and others. Participants will be expected to participate in the group work and presentations during the workshop which will be assessed formatively. Learning pathway readings and asynchronous activities to develop further knowledge and understanding of the topics will support individual learning.

Non credit bearing - Group presentation of final analysis of management issue to be discussed during workshop time. To be completed during workshop time, guided independent learning and to be presented during final timetabled workshop.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
