Summary module description:
This module covers application of transferable skills to technical topics.

Aims:
To enhance students' communication skills, with particular reference to the communication of mathematics, as well as developing skills associated with group work and assimilating unfamiliar content, with the intent of reporting to both the specialist and non-specialist through a variety of mediums.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
- Produce written technical reports involving unfamiliar mathematical content;
- Produce training materials on a mathematical topic (involving a computing element);
- Work effectively in teams.

Additional outcomes:

Outline content:
An important skill for the professional mathematician is the ability to apply their knowledge to an unfamilar problem and to communicate their findings: additionally, mathematicians must be able to train non-mathematicians in a particular technical topic. This module will focus on (i) developing the ability to transfer your existing subject knowledge to an unfamiliar application, and (ii) enhancing your communication skills when addressing an audience who do share your particular mathematical background.

- Communicating with and training the non-specialist.

A peer feedback model is provided to enable self review and formative feedback.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    Submission of two pieces of coursework in August/September: one modelling assignment and one written mathematical training guide.
