Summary module description:

•To facilitate students' understanding of Property Law through the practice of independent and group research
•To explain and present a given topic in different formats to different audiences, both legal and lay.

Assessable learning outcomes:

  • demonstrate an understanding ot the significance of legal and equitable property rights in the context of co-ownership of land;
  • demonstrate a knowledge of the nature, scope, creation and enforceability of such rights;
  • indentify the relevant law applicable to straightforward factual situations relating to land and real property;
  • apply the relevant law in those situations so as to reach clear and supportable conclusions;
  • undertake independent research;
  • explain difficult legal concepts in both legal and lay language;
  • present legal information in an attractive, assessible and useful way.

  • Implied trusts
  • Shared ownership of land
  • Proprietary estoppel

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
10 lectures online and 1 practical in the autumn term,covering both substantive material and research skills and methods, and two further practical sessions in the spring term, also focusing on both substantive and skills- based topics. Independent research, group discussion and team work on the topic set for the assessed coursework.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:
One piece of coursework of no more than 5 pages; one piece of coursework of no more than 4 pages; and a group poster, due on dates to be notified in the spring term. The assessed coursework facilitates students' understanding of Property Law through the practice of independent research, group discussion, teamwork and problem-solving and through having to explain and present a given topic in both legal and lay formats.

Formative assessment methods:
Blackboard and workbook exercises.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convener will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day[1] (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    40% overall

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Submission of a new piece of coursework in September. Only the failed element must be submitted.
