Summary module description:
This module aims to consider ways of conceptualising culture and intercultural communication; to clarify the relationship between culture, communication and discourse; to develop understanding of issues involved in the identification, description and critical examination of intercultural encounters; to consider a range of issues and approaches related to the teaching of intercultural communication.

This module aims to consider ways of conceptualising culture and intercultural communication; to clarify the relationship between culture, communication and discourse; to develop understanding of issues involved in the identification, description and critical examination of intercultural encounters; to consider a range of issues and approaches related to the teaching of intercultural communication.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • critically discuss some of the main ways in which culture is defined and conceptualised
  • relate differences between these approaches to the ways in which culture is used as an analytical or explanatory tool
  • identify and critically evaluate elements of intercultural discourse in everyday communication
  • demonstrate knowledge of the research traditions used in investigations of intercultural communication
  • understand the various domains around which cultures are characterized
  • analyse instances of intercultural communication
  • explain the implications of findings in intercultural communication research for teaching and learning.

Additional outcomes:
The module will promote the development of autonomous learning skills through engagement with distance study module materials. It will also promote heightened awareness of the cultural specificity characterising various domains of human life. Students will be encouraged to use a virtual learning environment for discussion and reflection.

Outline content:
The topics to be covered during the module are as follows: On culture; Approaching the intercultural; Some theories about communication; Research into intercultural communication: a discoursal perspective; Teaching intercultural communication; Key issues; Materials and activities for the teaching of intercultural communication.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Students work through specifically written distance study module materials, doing tasks and reading commentaries on those tasks. They also receive core readings in the form of selected articles and two core textbooks. Online activities complement the work done in every unit. The module tutor can be contacted by e-mail, letter or phone.
