Summary module description:

This module helps to develop critical knowledge and skills in leadership, teambuilding and project planning and control to support the development of a digital solution to a problem. It applies leadership principles to the leadership of digital architecture design and change required by a consulting client, together with principles of communication, governance and management of the solution.


The aim of Architecture Leadership is to provide students with the knowledge and principles

to lead a digital business architecture and technology focused team in a highly competitive and technology-rich environment. 

The capability of leading others in planning, designing and implementing digital technology architecture projects is a key development area for technology consultants. The module is in two parts, initially focusing on man management and leadership, change management and other types of leadership that are vital to modern business technology leadership. The course then introduces the principles of teamwork, cohesion and team management such as work definition, risk, issue and change management that are a vital foundation for understanding and supporting change management in a changing businesses. The module also covers general approaches to decision management to support effective and rational decision making. The course then unites the two sections by examining the challenges and best practices for leading and managing digital technology consulting teams charged with understanding and enhancing elements of business architecture. It covers the principles of digital leadership necessary to lead and man digital consulting teams This is one of the core BTC modules to equip students with the essential knowledge to be able to provide leadership and organisation in business technology. Being able to respond well to time and complexity is a fundamental ability taught by the module

Assessable learning outcomes:

At the completion of this module, students will gain knowledge and skills necessary for leading successful architecture teams including: types of leadership to employ in different situations, organising, growing and leading cohesive and effective teams; introductory approaches to decision making, scheduling and task management; and delegation and management of stakeholders. Also methods of communicating with teams, individuals and business stakeholders, principles of self-management and the key roles and perspectives of a leader. Students will also be able to apply the knowledge in team performance in many situations (bid teams, project teams, competence clusters, consulting teams).

The module focuses on the leadership competencies, which covers the following areas:

• Leadership theories and their role in business strategy and practices;

• Leadership practices and techniques Effective communication within the context of leading;

• Principles and methods of teambuilding with emphasis on team dynamics for different business purposes;

• Principles of team management and organisation 

• Decision making in different business situations and circumstances

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

A range of teaching and learning methods will be employed including exercises, tutorials, videos and case studies, but will focus largely on lectures, in-class practical, group work and independent supported learning. During the course, students are encouraged to build their personal leadership profile via team building assignments and networking with other students.

Other information on summative assessment:

The assessed course work (100%) involves 5000 word individual coursework report based on a given case study.

Formative assessment methods:

Students will be required to produce one presentation as a member of a team responding to a digital architecture leadership case exercise. The presentation marks will be provided for information, but will not be formally assessed.

Length of examination:

Requirements for a pass:

Students will be required to obtain a mark of 50% to pass the assessment. Pass criteria - To pass this module, the students must demonstrate their understanding on principles of leading a team and demonstrate the capabilities of designing and advising architectural leadership. Distinction criteria - To achieve distinction the students must exhibit their original thoughts and critical-analysis ability in the solutions proposed in the course work. 

Reassessment arrangements:
Reassessment will be by re-submission of coursework.
