Summary module description:
This module is compulsory for all Single Subject History students.

This course is designed to induce reflection on the issues involved in the presentation of the past to the public beyond the academic world. It aims to provide students with an opportunity to apply their subject-based skills to a practical project involving both independent analysis and group co-operation, as well as developing expertise in project-design and time-management. The emphasis will be on both critical thinking and transferable skills.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:
•Understand the issues involved in the presentation of the past to a non-academic public.
•Conceive and plan a group project
•Bring a project to fruition by organised, collaborative work Organise material and articulate arguments effectively Evaluate their project
•Display transferable skills within the areas of presentation-giving and IT

Additional outcomes:
The module also aims to develop interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively in a team, and to encourage confidence in the use of archives and Special Collections, with the additional aim of enhancing employability.

Outline content:
Students are required early in the Autumn Term to choose one of the listed projects,
which will normally involve a group placement.
Students will be divided into groups, and will work independently and as a group on their projects, producing a portfolio which includes a log of their activities and division of labour. Group presentations of the projects will be given in Week 2 of the Spring term. The portfolios will be submitted following the presentations. Following the presentations, students will peer-assessment of their own work and that of their group.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
This is identified as an independent activity which also encourages co-operation, team-work and self-reflexivity. Students will be expected to make necessary plans and arrangements themselves, with the support of a supervisor. A proposal for the chosen project must be presented to the module convenors by Week 5, upon which feedback will be given. Group supervision arrangements will be coordinated by the module convenor and take place via e-mail. To support the group presentations, lectures will be given on the issues of the presentation of the past to the wider public, and staff from the University’s collections will be available for advice.
There will also be a talk from Careers staff on working in groups.

Formative assessment methods:
Guidance will be given on the weightings of the different elements, including the presentation, and on how peer assessment is to be conducted.

Project output - 60% (Portfolio 40%, Log 20%); The Project is presented and submitted in the spring term. The associated Portfolio should include appropriate illustrative and supporting materials plus a log of activities and division of labour.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    A mark of 40% overall

    Reassessment arrangements:
    Students who achieve an overall threshold performance may not be able to re-sit this module. Where a re-sit is permitted, the student will be required to write an essay, selected from a list of three options, of approximately 2,500 words on aspects of Public History. This must be re-submitted by 12 noon on the last Friday of August.
