Summary module description:
Summary description This optional module aims to provide an opportunity for reflective learning in relation to a placement or work experience undertaken during the summer vacation or the academic year. Students will be admitted to the module at the discretion of the programme director and the module convenor, subject to the satisfactory completion of an appropriate placement. Students will be responsible for securing their own placement. The written assessment provides students with an opportunity for critical reflection on the work of an arts or media organisation and on their own career development.

Students will also be encouraged to reflect on the transferable skills they have acquired in the course of their studies and to identify skills they plan to develop in relation to future employment.

By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:

- demonstrate the practical and organisational expertise required to fulfil a defined role in an arts or media organisation;

- give a detailed and analytic account of the work of an arts or media organisation;

- identify their training needs and relate these to their post-university career plans;

- deploy skills in research, analysis, synthesis, writing and presentation in the portfolio.

This module enables students to develop practical and organisational skills. The module extends skills and competencies which are central to the degree: teamwork; oral communication and group co-operation; critical and contextual analysis and coherent argument; presentation of written work.

Outline content:

The module will be available to students who have undertaken a relevant work placement, either during the summer vacation or during the academic year. Students will be admitted to the module at the discretion of the programme director and module convenor. The module can be taken in Autumn, Spring or Summer term. Students work with an assigned supervisor on a 4000 word portfolio, documenting their learning on the placement. This will include: (a) a detailed account of the organisation where the work was undertaken, an overview of its main activities and an indication of its strengths and weaknesses in view of the challenges it currently faces; (b) a detailed account of the student’s work for the organisation, drawing attention to the utilisation of skills and competencies developed during their undergraduate studies and outlining new skills and competencies developed through the experience; (c) an analysis of the relationship between the student’s work experience and intended career, including detailed consideration of future training needs and plans for fulfilling these needs; (d) an appendix (outside the word count) of relevant documentation, which may include photographs, printed or recorded materials, statistical or other data.

Students will be required to attend three individual tutorials, one to agree the nature and scope of the written assignment and two to monitor their progress.

Note that this module can be taken in any term, although the table below indicates the Autumn term.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
