Summary module description:
This module builds on Practical 2: Film & TV to give students an enhanced experience of the production of film or television texts. Bringing together the skills and processes developed in Practical 2: Film & TV, students work together in small and large group contexts to present a fully realised television production or short film. The resulting production relates directly to the critical modules explored in Part 1 as well as exploiting the practical and technical skills developed on the course. The production work is reflected upon critically in the documentation of the process.

This module represents the culmination of practical work in film and television in Part 1. It aims to brings together the skills and concepts of developing practical film and television production (including research) that have been developed terms 1 and 2, in order to give students the experience of constructing, under close staff supervision, a film or television production. It aims to enable the students to draw on the critical concepts around the construction of meaning, individual and group textual analysis and contextual research, design and technical skills and an understanding of critically informed production to develop a creative and dynamic piece to which each member of the group contributes. Furthermore it aims to give them some insight into professional practice. The production is reflected upon in written documentation.

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:
• work effectively in small and larger groups in order to plan and produce a systematic production;
• demonstrate an understanding of 'critical practice', as initiated in Practical 1: Making Meaning and Practical 2: Film and TV. in the realisation of a coherent film or television production;
• demonstrate the ability to take creative decisions, as part of a group and in relationship to the analysis of the production text(s), the conceptual and historical contexts of source text and critical reading.
• demonstrate the ability to develop systems of performance and design relevant to the form of the text and production envisaged;
• demonstrate the ability to take decisions in relation to the deployment of space and the design of mise-en-scene in relation to the constraints of the production.
• operate the required specialist equipment within the constraints of a specific production, and in accordance with the safety policy of the department;
• document, analyse and critically evaluate the processes of production and the level of success of the final presentation(s), drawing on appropriate critical and theoretical frames of reference.

Additional outcomes:
The module plays a significant role in the development of skills and competencies which are central to the course: oral communication, argument and collaboration required for effective group work; management and communication skills required to satisfactorily carry out responsibilities in small and large group presentations; appropriate deployment of research using printed and electronic resources; critical analysis and coherent argument, both individually and collectively; identifying and addressing problems in the analysis, evaluation and development of film and television texts.

Outline content:
The module consists of the development of film or television productions based on traditions which interrogate dominant conventions of film and television, building from the exercises and small group work undertaken in Practical 2: Film and TV. Under close staff supervision, students collaborate in the construction of a group production project in either film or television, each person taking on major creative, technical and/or performance roles in the production. The shape of the project varies from year to year depending of numbers taking the module and the stimuli texts that ground the student work. Through workshop exploration, research, textual analysis and small group experimentation, the questions raised by the stimuli texts identified and addressed to allow students to work towards the realisation of the finished pieces.

A group oral assessment and discussion helps to prepare students for the written reflection on their work in fully developed documentation of the production, which takes particular account of the specialist area within which any single student has worked. The module extends students' experience of critical practice in film and television and allows an element of specialisation that will act as the basis for their practical choices taken at Part Two.

Global context:
This module develops students’ critical thinking in relation to, and their understanding of, devising and production techniques common to a range of national contexts and traditions.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The module deploys a range of teaching and learning methods including seminar discussion on conceptual and historical contexts and textual analysis. Small group presentations address areas of contextual research and production history and practice. Whole group textual analysis and discussion of pertinent research contexts and creative practices enable early decision making on the governing concepts of the production and small group collaborative devising addresses the detail of the realisation. Technical workshops support the development of key practical skills. These processes prepare students for the development of their own projects in Part 2 and give them insight into professional practice.

Formative assessment methods:
There will be presentations and rehearsals in class (small and large group) with oral feedback throughout the module.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
