Summary module description:
The module provides students with the opportunity to undertake detailed research on an individual topic. These are usually linked to the current research activities in the Department. Projects are proposed by staff and, following an indication of their preferences, they are then allocated to students. Allocation will take place during the early part of the Spring Term but most work is undertaken through the summer once the Modular Examinations have been completed.

Aims:
The aim of project work is to provide the student with an experience of food research through the design and execution of an individual project.

Assessable learning outcomes:
At the end of this module students will be able to:
•formulate and critically assess a scientific argument based on data
•design a scientific project in consultation with others and carry out a programme of research, responding to the changing circumstances as they arise
•draw on knowledge and data to set the research in context and to evaluate its contribution to the food or nutrition biosciences
•prepare a scientific paper in a format suitable for submission to an academic journal.

Additional outcomes:
Students will be better able to appreciate the structure of scientific research and potential career opportunities by taking part.

Outline content:
Students will select a project and develop and perform it under the supervision of a member of academic staff. Students are first required to research the literature relevant to their project and to plan their project work, including identifying the hypothesis to be tested. The research will normally be carried out over four months.

Global context:
Depending upon the subject of the selected project, it is possible to undertake a project which has wider international significance.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Most of the learning will be self-directed with the exception of tutorial sessions with the supervisor (or a delegated alternate). The majority of the projects will involve experimental work in a laboratory although the nature of projects is very varied.

•Presentation on progress will normally take place in the second half of July.
