Summary module description:
The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to identify and investigate particular (individual) interests and concerns through practical engagement in the studio, and through related research; to develop the capacity for self criticism through informed debate and to develop confidence in students' ability to recognise, research and use working processes relevant to their developing practice. The module also aims to allow students to develop the skills necessary to use at least one form of visual documentation, and to develop self awareness in the context of career decision making, knowledge of the career opportunities that are available to them and the skills to make effective applications.

- foster in each student a critical awareness and understanding of contemporary art and its contexts
- develop students informed interest in the subject, enhance creativity and independence of thought through the provision of a supportive learning environment which promotes collaborative and independent learning

Assessable learning outcomes:
By the end of this module it is expected that students will be able to show:
- the ability to initiate and develop work independently and creatively
- evidence of critical judgement and visual awareness both in the development of the work and its presentation
- evidence of the identification, exploration and experimentation of materials relevant to the enquiry
- the ability to locate and assemble information on contemporary and/or historical precedents relevant to their practice
- the ability to reflect upon their practice orally and in writing
- judgement in the appropriate documentation of their work
- dentify assess and articulate their skills, interests and personal values and strengths in the context of career decision making
- develop careers information retrieval, research and decision making skills using a variety of sources including the internet and interviews
- recognise and be able to write an effective application; identify the purpose and processes of recruitment interviews and how to perform effectively.

Additional outcomes:
This module also aims to enable students to develop transferable skills, organise time productively, develop communication skills and effectiveness in group situations. Students will also develop their IT skills by use of relevant web resources, and develop business awareness.

Outline content:
Students will build upon their achievement from Part 1. They will make the first steps toward the development of a personal practice. They will extend their experience of materials and relevant technology and develop critical skills. They will question the relationship of intention to outcome. Issues of presentation will be identified. Students will consider different methods for documentation of studio work. Introduction to individual studio practice through group and individual tutorials, studio seminars and skill demonstrations, workshops and lectures. Technical assistance and instruction through workshops and demonstrations and occurs throughout the year during tutorials at the student's request. Directed visits to museums and galleries. Introduction to Career Learning. Module is assessed by a presentation of work, statement and documentation of coursework. There are two types of assessment, an Interim and a Part assessment. Interim Assessments are formative and take place mid-module where a diagnostic mark is achieved alongside self assessment, written and verbal feedback.

Global context:
Students are introduced to the exchange programmes and can apply for the following years study. The nature of art practice and the study of art is not geographically specific and contemporary art is considered within a international context.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Transitional studio practice projects (including summer project), encourage self-initiated programmes of work, enabling students to develop specific techniques, skills, processes and working methods as required by their individual programme of work. This is supported by the teaching of practical skills embedded into the structure, content and delivery of the module focusing on specific studio disciplines through inductions, workshops, technical demonstrations and lectures. Student’s work closely with their studio tutor in individual and group tutorials, seminars, peer learning and collaboration are encouraged as are booking spaces to test work and developing exhibition opportunities. Studio group sessions develop critical evaluation of practice and foster reflective skills towards exhibition/presentation and documentation. Regular gallery study visits, post visit review blogs and seminars, visiting lectures support and contextualise the studio work. Career learning is introduced, including talks from alumni, CV clinics and assignments including skills self-awareness, career planning and application writing. Formative and self-assessment occurs during studio tutorials and at interim assessment point with written and verbal feedback. Summative assessment at the end of the Part is through appropriate presentation, documentation and statement.

Other information on summative assessment:
Summative assessment at the end of the module is through appropriate exhibition presentation, statement and documentation. Performances and film screenings are timetabled for assessment

Part Assessment takes place in the Summer term. Students will have a given period of time and be allocated a space in which to present their coursework, documentation of practice, supporting work and research.

They will present with their work a short written statement describing and evaluating their practice.

3. Documentation of practice in the form of a reflective journal which evidences and evaluate previous iterations of practice throughout the module

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
