Summary module description:
«p»Students undertake an intensive investigation into an organisation, museum, gallery, studio complex, selected in consultation with a supervisor. Students will develop and present a portfolio consisting of elements such as an annotated list of sources; a critical bibliography including an analysis of a selected number of key sources; an exhibition and reproduction history, including illustrations; a visual analysis; a short discursive text accounting for the significance of their chosen investigation.  It may also be an exhibition or key texts in the field.«/p»


This module aims to introduce students to identifying topics, finding resources, marshalling arguments and selecting from material over a more sustained project or piece of writing than is required for coursework essays. It aims to provide an opportunity for the study of aspects of the history of art in depth, fostering the student's growing understanding of the nature of history of art as a subject. It aims to enable students to begin to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and where their specific interests in the subject lie. It aims to foster in students the ability to take responsibility for their own learning. It aims to provide foundation work in self-management and organization of study as a preparation for the writing of a dissertation at Part 3.

Assessable learning outcomes:

•    demonstrate the ability to articulate and substantiate their own point of view, evaluating evidence and using reasoned arguments

•    demonstrate the management of their own work schedule, and give evidence of independence and self-motivation

•    demonstrate evidence of having seen and inspected visual artefacts, buildings, art objects or images appropriate to the topic at first hand, whether in museums and galleries or at sites in this country or in their study trip abroad in year 2

•    demonstrate the ability to use visual material effectively as evidence and illustration in written argument.


Additional outcomes:

Students need to use and demonstrate skills of planning, organization, initiative and negotiation.

Outline content:

One independent project is undertaken. Guidelines and frameworks are provided by tutors, but students are responsible for identifying topics through which to apply the guidelines or framework.

Students prepare one essay and one report, together totaling 4000-5000 words.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

    You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

    Assessment requirements for a pass:

    The essay must be submitted in order to gain a pass and achieve a threshold performance.
