Summary module description:

The module aims to provide a space for the student to reflect critically on their professional practice and development, in a topic area of their choice, through engaging with appropriate literature and research in the field of educational leadership and management and by producing a piece of written coursework. The chosen topic may be covered by validated modules not running at a particular time or may be rooted in the student’s immediate personal and professional development framework. 


Aims:


  • To identify a topic of central concern to the student’s personal and professional development, related to an area of educational leadership and management but not taught on the course as offered

  • To negotiate, with the module convenor, a learning contract including appropriate aims and learning outcomes

  • To conduct a literature search and other suitable investigations to establish an academic base for the student’s field of study

  • To devise and submit an appropriate assignment whose marking criteria reflect the learning outcomes identified below.

  • Produce well-structured and well-argued assessments

Outline content:

The content of this module will depend upon the topic chosen by the student. However, all topics must be related to an aspect of educational leadership and management and to the overall aims of the programme. The chosen topic may be covered by validated modules not running at a particular time or may be rooted in the student’s immediate personal and professional development framework. 

Supervision will be co-ordinated by the module leader, but will be allocated according to the topic chosen. 



Here is a list of possible topics:




  • Gender and women leaders

  • Identity and educational leadership

  • Distributed leadership: Power Sharing or Delegation of Responsibilities

  • Teacher Leadership: Working with Pupils inside the Classroom and Working with Other teachers outside the Classroom

  • The Management of Professional Development of Teachers

  • Emotional Perspectives on Leadership and Management

  • The Performance Management of Teachers

  • Leading and Managing Professional Learning Communities


Global context:

Depending on the student’s professional background, research for this module may be conducted in an international setting and need not be UK based. For example, previous studies have been carried out in educational systems in China and Cyprus.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

Initial group meeting, one to one tutorials, on-line support materials.



Please note: There are different delivery models for this module as it is part of a number of modules being delivered through a summer school/blended learning approach as well as being offered as a taught module during term time

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

A negotiated task equivalent to a 5,000 word report (100%). This will be related to a specific aspect of educational leadership and management as chosen by the student, in consultation with the module leader. To be submitted prior to the start of the Autumn term (2nd week in September).



 


Formative assessment methods:

Students are required to submit a research proposal form which needs to be approved by the module leader before any research is carried out.
