Summary module description:
This module will cover the nature of Autism Spectrum Disorder and the ways the education system may make provision for school student to ensure effective learning. Contemporary psychological theories to account of the processing styles in this condition will be covered. These theories will be used to underpin an understanding of diagnosis in relation to cognitive, communication and social and emotional characteristics. Validated approaches to teaching students with ASD such as TEACCH will be discussed. Practical classroom approaches will be covered.

The aim of the module is to provide students with a deeper understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder in order to equip them to both understand and respond appropriately to students in the classroom setting.

Assessable learning outcomes:
-An understanding of the nature of ASD and current research in the field
-Knowledge of the range of approaches to understanding student’s needs
- Knowledge of teacher perspectives appropriate responses in the field of ASD
-A critical approach to the evaluation of research in the field
-The ability to formulate questions which teachers have to deal with in relation to ASD and the skills to design and plan an appropriate response
-An awareness of the requirements of a masters level module in Education

Outline content:
Introduction to ASD and the challenges it presents:
Formulating pedagogical questions
A conceptual framework for ASD in an inclusive setting
Engagement with practitioner based learning

-Advanced literature searches and bibliographic methods
-Analysing Documents and Texts, i.e. policy statements in the school’s prospectus
-Philosophical approaches to educational inquiry with regard to inclusion
-Understanding ASD
-Assessment and Diagnosis
-Developing Social Understanding
-An introduction to a range of approaches used to enable children with ASD to access learning experiences
-Successful responses to behavioural expressions of ASD in the classroom/school environment.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The central content areas will be covered through lectures and presentations.
Workshop sessions will be focused on bibliographic techniques, documentary analysis.
Group activities will focus on discussions of class-based learning.
There will be group tutorials on module planning.
Most teaching sessions will utilise more than one of these approaches.

Other information on summative assessment:
There will be one assignment of approximately 5000 words. Students will have the option of producing a research proposal for their dissertation study which should be located within a wide-ranging consideration of the literature in the field.
