Summary module description:
The school placements provide students with the opportunity to extend and consolidate their school experience so that they are able to meet the Teachers’ Standards at a high level. There will be opportunities to enrich this experience through links to targets and professional interests.

Students undertake school placements with the support of a school and university tutor. ED3PI1, Professional Studies and Inclusion, is a co-requisite as it prepares students for the placements throughout the autumn term, and follows it up in the summer term.

•To develop insight and understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of teaching
•To be able to apply principles in developing effective teaching and class management skills
•To undertake full responsibility for the continued improvement of their teaching skills
•To develop increased awareness of children’s individual needs within an inclusive teaching and learning environment

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, trainees will be able to:

•Develop a reflective approach to teaching and learning by successfully combining classroom experience and theory.
•Recognise the content of the SEN Framework and other relevant legislation.
•Be aware of the distinctive features of Special Schools and Units.
•Demonstrate further understanding of how children develop as learners including those with SEN.
•Show that they can differentiate support and teaching to address individual needs.
•Demonstrate the ability to handle behaviour issues constructively and fairly.
•Understand an inclusive approach, embracing diversity.
•Show an understanding of the inter-dependence of assessment, planning, evaluating and recording to facilitate children's learning.
•Carry out research and reflection within the framework given by tutors.

Additional outcomes:
•to further develop their teaching skills in line with national requirements, particularly in the area of inclusive teaching and learning.

Outline content:

Attendance at school placement will include: discussion with professional colleagues in school: planning and teaching at whole class level; assessing pupil progress; becoming involved with the wider life of the school; and working towards the national Teachers’ Standards.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
The student will work alongside an experienced teacher and will implement the ideas and principles met during the taught Modules ED3PI1, ED3SA1, ED3SE1, ED3SM1, ED3AC1, ED3AC2, ED3AC3, ED3EM1 and ED3SP1. They will learn through discussion, reflection, teacher feedback and gaining practical experience.

The placement school experience involves one week in the spring term linked to SEND and an 8-week block school placement in the autumn and spring terms. Students also complete 5 enrichment days in school linked to targets and professional interests.

Unless there are exceptional or extenuating circumstances, the student is expected to take on the role of class teacher for 80% of the available timetable for a minimum of three weeks and show satisfactory progress towards fully meeting the national Teachers’ Standards as demonstrated through an Evidence Log and reported by the school mentor and University tutors.

Formative assessment methods:
Ongoing methods of assessment include observation feedback, discussions with mentor and tutor, self-reflection and target setting and review. Student engagement and attendance on the week long SEND placement will also be monitored and feedback given. Students will be expected to keep a professional school experience file as part of the block placement requirements.

Penalties for late submission:

Attendance at school placement is mandatory, as is meeting the requirements of the School Experience File and the placement school's professional routines and deadlines. Absence from placement can be taken for illness and be self-certified for up to one week. Any longer absences must be granted by an Extenuating Circumstances Form (ECF) and when the ECF runs out the student must return to placement. In the event of a student missing placement for an unauthorised reason the Module Convenor will review the circumstances and a Fail grade may be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
Students must meet all of the Teachers’ Standards (Pass/Fail).

Reassessment arrangements:
Resit of part, or whole, of the placement.

3) Specialist clothing, footwear or headgear: No specialist clothing is required for this module, although students should be mindful that overly casual clothing will not be acceptable in the professional placement environment.

6) Travel, accommodation and subsistence: Students are expected to pay £2.50 per day towards the travel costs of reaching their placement school. The remainder of the costs can be claimed back from the university but only based on economy mileage or if standard class transport has been used and the cheapest ticket obtained. Students should expect to pay the cost ‘up front’ and claim back at the end of the placement.
