Summary module description:
This module builds on students’ research and analysis skills developed during the Programme, in terms of English to BSL translation. It involves two Sign Theatre monologues: one contemporary and one providing the challenges inherent in Shakespeare.

The aim of this module in Sign Theatre is to allow students to select, rehearse and perform two Sign Theatre monologues to a live audience. They will pick a Shakespeare piece and a contemporary one and over the course of the term they must research their chosen piece in the context of the Play as a whole and the Playwright’s body of work. They should identify the ‘sign challenges’ of one of the two pieces.

Assessable learning outcomes:
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
• identify the challenges inherent in this particular extract in the process of translating English literary text into a visual/spatial language intelligible to deaf members of an audience, and a clear attempt to resolve difficulties presented as required by the extract under translation;
• demonstrate a thorough understanding of both textual interpretation and the intention of the dramatist via a clear and intelligent sign translation;
• evidence an imaginative and creative choice of signs which balance clarity of meaning and accuracy of sign translation with appropriate theatricality and concerns for the aesthetics of a visual language;
• reflect, as far as this is possible, the writing style and form of the dramatist conveying this to non-hearing members of an audience;
• provide evidence of good hand tension, appropriate use of space around the body, clear directional signs where these have been employed, ambidexterity, and accompanying lip-patterns as required;
• combine skills in signing with more general bodily movements, and an awareness of performer/audience relations – i.e. the need for visibility of signing in body positions at all times;
• present a strong characterisation that demonstrates a clear interpretation of the role within the scene portrayed;
• break down dramatic speeches, with a consideration of variety of pace, fluidity, and emotional interpretation.

Additional outcomes:
This module closely follows a format for professional auditions, and provides students with some experience in this field, including the two performances of each solo piece to their peer group and self- assessment of their performance.

Outline content:
Following an introductory session, students will meet with the tutor in small groups to consider suitable extracts for presentation. Throughout the Spring term students will meet with the tutor for one-to-one tutorial sessions.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:
Depending upon student numbers in any one cohort, tutorials are likely to be conducted on a one-to-one basis in order that the student receive focussed supervision in this final stage of their Sign Theatre journey through the Programme.

Penalties for late submission:
The Module Convenor will apply the following penalties for work submitted late, in accordance with the University policy.

  • where the piece of work is submitted up to one calendar week after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for the piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
